THE ROAD FROM LONDON TO FLAMBOROUGH

An interesting , scarce and detailed , early 18th century antique road strip map, showing part of the route from London to Flamborough via Lincoln & Tempsford, Eaton, Buckden, Stilton Peterborough, Market Deeping, Bourne & Sleeford

Published in Thomas Gardner's

"A Pocket-Guide to the English Traveller: Being a Complete Survey and measurement of all the Principle Roads and Most Considerable Cross-Roads in England and Wales"

London: J. Tonson & J. Watts, 1719.

Plate 41

This atlas was never re-published and therefore quite scarce.

The map depicts a route in the form of 7 vertical strips with a compass rose showing orientation; additionally, miles, furlongs, towns, churches, windmills, rivers and hills are depicted.

Based on the earlier survey of the roads by John Ogilby and bearing a dedication to Sir John Brownlow in the central cartouche.

For greater detail please view further close up images.

With original centrefold and light overall age toning otherwise unmarked, a crisp, dark impression which would frame well

Measuring approx 11" x 7" ( 280mm x 180mm )
