JOHANNES BLAEU

Published Amsterdam 1662 in;

"Geographiae Blauianae Volumen Quintum quo Angliae quae est Europae liber undecimus continetur".

A fine original Blaeu copper engraved map of the Fens or Fenlands of Eastern England.

A fascinating map showing the flooded regions of parts of Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdonshire, Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire.

The elaborate system of dykes and drainage channels devised mainly by the Dutch is shown in great detail. North is oriented to the right.

Coverage extends from Peterborough in the west (top of map) through Ely, Downham Market and King's Lynn to Swaffham in the east,
and from The Wash through Wisbech and Spalding to Cambridge, Newmarket and St.Neott's in the south.

The title is displayed in a pictorial cartouche with numerous ditch digging tools and harvest produce.

A Royal coat of arms, blank dedication tablet, and a scale of miles cartouche add to the visual appeal. Latin text verso.

Enhanced with contemporary hand colour which remains bright and fresh.

Fine condition other than minor age blemishes, free of repairs or restoration. Centre fold as issued.

A crisp, dark impression. The heavy grade hand laid paper remains robust and stable.

Approx. 21" x 17" (540mm x 430mm) map area only, with full margins beyond.

Willem Janzoon Blaeu (1571 -1638) founded the Blaeu publishing company which dominated the map making industry of 17th century Netherlands. His sons Joan (Johannes) and Cornelius continued the family business after Willem's death in 1638. Their greatest achievement was perhaps the famous atlas "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Sive, Atlas Novus", which eventually ran to 12 volumes and was published in several languages from 1635 - 1662. The print shop and warehouse was destroyed by fire in 1672 and Willem's last son died the following year.
