Described

by John Speed

Published by Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell, London 1676

A fine original 17th century copper engraved county map of Worcestershire by John Speed.

English text verso, printed on robust hand laid paper, enhanced with attractive early hand colouring.

The title is displayed in an elaborate strapwork cartouche.

The map is flanked on the left with 5 coats of arms of "The families who have borne the tittle of Worcester since the conquest."

A street plan of Worcester is featured with numerous streets and places of importance identified in a lettered and numbered key.

The scale of miles is surmounted by a set of dividers and a battle scene at Evesham is also featured.

Some overall age toning as seen, otherwise fine condition, free of repairs or restoration.

Approx. 20" x 15" (510mm x 385mm) map area only with margins beyond.

John Speed (1552-1629)

Speed is without doubt the most celebrated and revered of all the early English map makers and his fine maps are widely collected all over the world.

The decorative flourishes combined with the most accurate cartography of the day make these maps both fascinating and visually appealing.

He is best known for his two great atlases, "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine" and "Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World".

Many of the maps were however also sold individually, either uncoloured or coloured for a considerably higher price.

The successful London print sellers Humble and Sudbury were the original publishers with later editions to follow by Roger Rea and Bassett and Chiswell.
