THE EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE

by

JOHANNES BLAEU

Published Amsterdam circa 1645

An original Blaeu copper engraved county map of the East Riding of Yorkshire

The title is displayed in a decorative cartouche featuring fruit and vegetable harvests.

The sea area is decorated with a sailing ship and the coats of arms of the Earls of Holderness.

Latin text verso.

Enhanced with original or early hand colouring, now a little faded.

There is light toning and soiling overall and some faint bleed-through of the text verso can be seen.

Several marginal edge tears have been repaired verso, not affecting printed area. Centre fold as issued.

Not a prime example, but this is still an interesting and presentable antique map over 350 years old. The faults are amply reflected in the low price.

Approx. 19.5" x 15" (500mm x 380mm) map area only, with wide margins beyond.

Please see also close up images.

Willem Janzoon Blaeu (1571 -1638) founded the Blaeu publishing company which dominated the map making industry of 17th century Netherlands. His sons Joan (Johannes) and Cornelius continued the family business after Willem's death in 1638. Their greatest achievement was perhaps the famous atlas "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Sive, Atlas Novus", which eventually ran to 12 volumes and was published in several languages from 1635 - 1662. The print shop and warehouse was destroyed by fire in 1672 and Willem's last son died the following year.
